Full-Time Positions

Apparel Design

A&F designers create high quality, aspirational product for each of our unique lifestyle brands.  The designer’s role at A&F is to take the product from initial concept through the production of the garment.  Designers stay fresh through shopping the market, researching vintage, and staying in tune with our customers.  This creative research fuels the big picture trend and mood direction at the beginning of each season.  Working in partnership with merchandising, designers create a balanced product assortment that is on-trend and in line with the brand’s handwriting.  Highly attentive to detail, designers focus on every aspect of product development, from fabric and trim selection to editing how the garment fits on live models.

Training Program

The Design Training Program is an intensive multi-week orientation that will build upon your formal design education and give you the tools necessary to apply that knowledge and experience here at A&F.  Through interactive, hands-on classroom sessions and on-the-job training, you will develop a solid foundation of the designer’s responsibilities throughout the product cycle.  At the conclusion of the program, trainees become Assistant Designers and are expected to make an immediate impact in their product area.

Apparel Designer Responsibilities

  •      Product Design – Responsible for creative input for a specific product category.
  •      Trend Spotting – Research and shop to identify emerging fashion trends and vintage samples
  •      Travel – Both for creative research, as well as to work with factories on product development and techniques
  •      Collaboration – Work with cross-functional team (Merchandising, Design, Sourcing, Technical Design, as well as factories/vendors) to ensure that the design vision is being carried out with integrity
  •      Sales Analysis – Partner with Merchandising to learn and understand sales information (style, color, fit, etc.) pertinent to designing into future seasons
  •      Presentation Skills – Present designs and vocalize point of view regarding relevant business and market trend findings

Many of the most successful design leaders at A&F were recruited directly from design schools in the U.S. and around the world.  Starting off as Assistant Designers with a great deal of responsibility from the on-set, over time designers can expect to gain experience across multiple brands and product categories.  As designers grow through the A&F career path, engaging leadership and creative vision-setting become increasingly important for success.  The opportunity for learning and career growth in is immense.

Qualifications

Computer-Aided Design (CAD) Design – Textiles

A&F CAD Designers are responsible for creating seasonal print, pattern and embroidery work (florals, stripes, plaids, repeats, etc.) for use in all product categories from concept to pre-production.  With the help of the Research & Development team in the state-of-the-art Innovation and Design Center, as well as vintage/inspiration trips, the Print & Pattern Designers collaborate with Design and Merchandising to keep prints and patterns fresh and ahead of the competition.  CAD Designers at A&F are highly creative, passionate about the brand and customer, have a great sense of style, strong eye for trend and color, and possess strong communication and organization skills.

CAD Design Responsibilities

As a CAD Designer, your focus will be to work through prints from concept to preproduction for use in all product categories, tops, bottoms and accessories. Candidates will have a passion for the brand and the customer, a strong eye for trend and color, an unparalleled attention to detail, and strong communication and organization skills.

  •      The ability to create original pattern work. A strong illustrative hand is highly recommended
  •      Create seasonal CAD color palettes
  •      Research new and innovative fabrications, prints, patterns, colors and embroideries
  •      Collaborate with the design team to generate brand appropriate artwork
  •      Working and reworking  pattern to achieve final print
  •      Researching and developing existing and emerging concepts and trend as inspiration.
  •      Sketching into the computer (Illustrator and Micrographix)
  •      Understands A&F brand customer (eye)
  •      Ability to self-manage

CAD Designer Qualifications

  •      Bachelor’s Degree in Fashion Design, CAD, Textiles or related field
  •      Passion for the A&F brands and an interest in fashion
  •      An amazing taste level & eye for color
  •      Ability to identify relevant fashion trends and interpret them for our family of brands
  •      Engaging personality with exceptional communication and presentation skills
  •      Self-motivated and detail-oriented with strong time management and organizational skills
  •      Career-driven with vigorous work ethic and high performance standards; able to work in fast paced environment
  •      An understanding of fabric construction, print techniques, and repeat patterns
  •      Knowledge of scans, cleans and re-colors of print and pattern
  •      Strong computer skills (Illustrator, Photoshop, U4ia/Kaledo)

 

Graphic Design

An A&F Graphic Designer is responsible for creating brand specific on-apparel artwork. Through vintage shopping, marketing and internet research, Graphic Designers develop seasonal graphic concepts for a wide range of apparel categories. After a concept is initialized, A&F graphic designers will work with the Research & Development team in our state-of-the art Innovation & Design Center to develop cutting edge print, appliqué, and embroidery techniques in each brand’s handwriting. Collaboration is extremely important in order to achieve the best results in Graphic Design at A&F. Graphic Designers partner with Design and Merchandising to put the most trend-right graphics into our stores.

Graphic Design Responsibilities

  •      Researching and developing existing and emerging concepts and trend
  •      Sketching into the computer
  •      Translate ideas from concept into actual, on-brand graphic packages
  •      Collaborate with Apparel Design in creating graphics for specific silhouettes
  •      Partner with Merchandising in order to get the best possible product delivered on time and on budget
  •      Maintain a constant knowledge of week-to-week sales and react through new designs
  •      Produce continuously strong packages at a quick rate
  •      Research, trend shop, and work with the IDC team on new and fresh ideas/techniques


Career Path

After learning the ropes and gaining a better understanding of on-apparel graphic design techniques, Assistant Graphic Designers are given the responsibility of owning multiple graphic packages from concept of final design.  Once familiar with the graphic production process, graphic designers start to take ownership in mood and inspiration gathering including vintage and sample shopping trips.  Graphic designers start to help in the on-boarding process and eventually manage other team members as they come closer to mastering the graphic design process.  Many of the current Graphic Design Directors climbed the ranks after joining the company as Assistant Graphic Designers.

  •      Degree in Graphic Design, Advertising Graphics, Illustration or relevant field
  •      Passion for the A&F Brands and an interest in apparel graphics
  •      Strong artistic sense and ability to create original artwork on a computer

  •      A fine arts background and/or printmaking experience is a plus
