Employer Profile: Baltimore Museum of Art, Baltimore, MD

The BMA offers Internships to undergraduate and graduate students, as well as recent graduates. These positions provide the opportunity for Interns to contribute to various Museum projects and activities while learning how a major institution functions on a day-to-day basis. Interns will be guided by their supervisor who will act as a mentor and teach them about their department’s function within the Museum.  Please note that the former application deadline of March 2 has been pushed back to allow more time for application completion.  The new deadline is to be determined.

Internships:

Arts of Africa, the Americas, Asia, and the Pacific Islands
Women who belong to the Sande women’s society in Sierra Leone dance helmet-style masks, representing female beauty, during the initiations of girls into adulthood. Women commission these masks from artists who travel through southern and western Sierra Leone. The BMA holds over thirty examples of these Sande Society masks in its African art collection but there could be approximately ten thousand in existence. The AAAPI Department is seeking an intern to compile an image database of known Sande Society helmet masks, so that individual artists can be identified. This task will involve searching online for images in African Art collections and contacting institutions that do not have their collections online.

Development & Membership
The Development Department Intern will assist in membership and development projects. This position will take an important role in the restructuring of the Development records archive including, weeding for non-essential information, interpreting records retention schedules, and preparing records for Museum archives. Other projects such as furthering and strengthening the Neighborhood Benefits Program, representing the membership program at events and programs, and other related duties may be assigned.

Library & Archives
The Archival Processing Intern will work under the direction and supervision of the BMA’s Head Librarian and Archivist to process manuscripts and/or institutional records. The Intern will be involved in all aspects of archival processing including arrangement and preservation as well as the creation of EAD-encoded finding aids and MARC21 records. The Intern will also scan and created metadata for selected materials.

Prints, Drawings and Photographs
The Department of Prints, Drawings & Photographs is looking for one intern to assist with the cataloguing of the Museum’s collection of WWI and WWII posters. The responsibilities of the IFPDA Summer Intern will include researching the posters and entering appropriate information into TMS (the Museum’s collection management database).

Textiles
The Textiles Intern will collect past exhibition, research, and conservation data from the hard copy file records and enter it into the museum database , documenting past exhibitions histories and conservation procedures performed on the textiles.

Visitor Services
The Visitor Services Department seeks an enthusiastic summer intern to assist in the development of systems for tracking and evaluating visitor experiences. Responsibilities include researching and reporting on peer institutions’ practices, compiling and reviewing museum reports, and working with colleagues to develop a comprehensive system for analyzing and reporting on visitor experiences. The intern will also assist in providing exemplary customer service and ensuring welcoming and positive experiences for the museum’s visitors, and may help with administrative projects and departmental initiatives, including efforts related to the museum’s renovations.

Job Description:  We are currently looking for one or more enthusiastic, highly committed instructors to teach arts integration through in-school residencies, Saturday workshops, and after-school programs with elementary and middle school students. Ideal candidates will have experience teaching one or more of the following: Stop-motion animation; Basics of graphic design; Web design using iWeb or similar; Video production and editing in Final Cut and iMovie; Printmaking; Bookbinding; Sculpture; Installation; Podcast recording; Audio recording with Garage Band.  Qualified candidates must be available at least 2 days per week, Monday through Friday, between 8:00 am – 4:00 pm for in-school programs, 3:00 – 6:00 pm for after-school programs, and/or on Saturdays between 9:00am – 5:00 pm for weekend workshops.

Excellent written and oral communication skills and reliability are a must. Teaching experience is required and experience working with students aged 13 and younger is preferred. We are an all-Macintosh organization and require that our instructors are tech-savvy and experienced Mac users.

Job Description:  We have a summer internship opportunity for a qualified creative individual interested in working with youth. Job Description: Progressive Arts Alliance is a 2014 Maker Corps Host and is looking for creative individuals interested in working with youth.  Corps Members will be employed at Progressive Arts Alliance for the summer of 2014 to engage children and families in creative projects, such as kinetic sculptures, that develop problem-solving skills, while gaining experience serving as community leaders.  We are looking for individuals who have an interest in “making;” concentrations may align with industrial design, interactive sculpture, product design, and more.

Title: Video Editing Intern (PAID)

Location: Cleveland, Ohio

Job Description:  Progressive Arts Alliance provides an exciting opportunity to expand your portfolio, gain experience editing, shooting, and use your creativity to help document and showcase dynamic arts programs and student performances. Video Production and Editing Interns shoot footage of our workshops and student performances. The position also allows interns to edit video of performances, promotional videos, compilations and more. Responsibilities also include creating finished DVDs with menus and animated title screens as needed.  This position also includes work as Studio Assistant to our Artist-Educators for our in-school and after-school video and animation programs. This internship provides a great opportunity to experience working directly with film and video artists in the classroom.

Length of commitment: 1 semester. Positions are available in the fall, spring, and summer. Anywhere between 5-30 flexible hours per week depending on intern’s availability.

Qualifications: Must be Macintosh proficient, have video editing experience using iMovie and Final Cut, and have experience shooting video.
