Higher Achievement is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping underserved middle-school students, referred to as “scholars”, improves their grades, attendance, and standardized test scores, culminating in acceptance to top high schools in Baltimore. We work with scholars, beginning in 5th grade and staying with them through 8th grade, to provide a rigorous, year-round out-of-school time program which includes classes in math, science, and reading, elective courses, overnight college visits, and field trips.

Achievement Coach

Paid/ Part-Time Position/ Start Date: Earliest Convenience

A part-time, paid position lasting for the duration of Higher Achievement’s Baltimore Afterschool Academy from mid-September through early May. Achievement Coaches ensure safety and structure of daily program operations and support the academic progress of scholars at one of our 3 Achievement Centers through homework completion and skills building practice. Depending on the needs of the Center and interests of the staff, Achievement Coaches may also teach an Elective Class to a group of approximately 15 scholars. The Achievement Coach supports Higher Achievement’s progressive, skills-based cultural and academic model. Achievement Coaches attend a multi-day orientation and training preceding Afterschool Academy’s start. Periodic trainings and professional development opportunities throughout the Academy will be required as well. This position includes both direct involvement with scholars and administrative tasks and requires weekly staff meetings.

Qualifications:

-Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent preferred; qualified current college students welcome to apply.

-Dynamic, flexible, culturally sensitive applicants with positive personalities required.

-At least one year’s experience working with middle school aged students strongly preferred.

-Current teachers or other educational professionals encouraged to apply.

-Strong organizational and time management skills.

-Bilingual speakers, especially in Spanish, encouraged to apply

After School Coordinator

Paid/ Part-Time Position/ Start Date: ASAP

A part-time, paid position lasting for the duration of Higher Achievement’s Baltimore Afterschool Academy from mid-September through early May.  AFSA Coordinators ensure safety and structure of daily program operations at one of our 3 Achievement Centers and support a cadre of approximately 20 volunteer mentors two evenings per week. AFSA Coordinators may also teach an Elective Class, assist with homework completion, and/or assist with events, depending on interest and needs of their center. The AFSA Coordinator supports Higher Achievement’s progressive, skills-based cultural and academic model. AFSA Coordinators attend a multi-day orientation and training preceding Afterschool Academy’s start. Periodic trainings and professional development opportunities throughout the Academy will be required as well. This position includes both direct involvement with scholars and administrative tasks and requires weekly staff meetings.

Mentor

Unpaid/ Volunteer Position/ Start Date: ASAP

Higher Achievement is currently recruiting mentors for its Afterschool Academy. Higher Achievement volunteers work with a small group of 5-8th grade scholars to help complete homework and demonstrate positive study skills to ensure targeted, individualized academic support. Volunteers commit to working with a group of 3 scholars for 90 minutes one evening per week during the school year, typically from 6:00 to 7:30pm. Prior experience is not required! Higher Achievement ensures there is a full-time staff member present at all times and provides ongoing support and training. Volunteers only need to bring their enthusiasm and commitment, and serve as positive role models to scholars. In return for their time and effort, volunteers receive the rewarding experience of making a lasting impact on a young person’s life!
