Globe is a national treasure and a unique part of Baltimore’s cultural history. MICA is thrilled to be able to bring this extraordinary collection onto its campus and allow its legacy to live on through the eyes and hands of the many artists, designers and scholars who will benefit from its continuing to serve as an active, working press,” said MICA Provost Ray Allen. “The integration of Globe will distinguish MICA among its peers nationally and make Baltimore a special destination for those with a special interest in hand letterpress work.

Globe Collection Intern

Globe studio interns will learn the basics of letterpress and screen printing, or, if already proficient, improve their skills in these crafts by working on internal and external projects. (Recent Globe projects have included posters for Sanrio for the first-ever Hello Kitty Con and the “Pump Me Up” exhibition at the Corcoran Gallery of Art.) Interns will learn more about the collection by proofing cuts and type to help with archiving those items. Interns will help to keep the letterpress studio and Globe archive room in the Dolphin Printmaking building organized and ready for printing and other projects, and will safeguard the collection and tools in the letterpress studio by monitoring the studio’s use. Interns will work to develop a stronger appreciation for and knowledge of Globe through branding, social media, design projects, and community outreach, both at MICA and in the broader community.

Qualifications:

The Globe Collection and Press at MICA is interested in interns with a diversity of experience. You need not be expert in all areas; we are searching for interns who wish to better establish Globe at MICA, spread the word about Globe beyond MICA’s borders, and help to expand the future role of Globe at MICA. We need people interested and experienced in letterpress printing, screen printing, graphic design, illustration, photography, social media, web site content development, documenting and researching history, curating of print materials, and community outreach. Interns should not mind getting dirty and be ready for hands on experiences in collaborative settings.
